Amigos!
We have some exciting news to share. Today, April 14, 2020, we started planting 16,500 agave plants on our farm in San Rafael, Sonora, Mexico. San Rafael is in a breathtakingly beautiful part of Sonora. Our farm is located within the denomination of origin (NOM), one of the 37 counties where agave plants must be grown to be officially recognized as Bacanora.
San Rafael is a small agricultural village with a population of about 300. As you can imagine, many of the residents earn very little money in comparison to other parts of Mexico. One of our goals has always been to create jobs in Mexico and we are doing so. Coincidentally, we have already created about a half dozen jobs in the US.
About three years ago I met a man named Jorge who is from the same town where I was born in Sonora. He was contemplating getting into the agave business. After listening to myself and Francisco Gonzales, one of the founders of Sunora products, this man decided to experiment with agave seeds.
Our technician, Mr. Rosas managed the project. They were so successful in their efforts that virtually all the agave seeds grew into healthy strong plants which generated many babies (pups). These 16,500 plants we purchased are the babies of the mother plants started from seeds three years ago by Jorge.
At Amigo Brands, we understand the importance of sustainability. We value people, families and community and we strive to contribute in a positive way. We are thankful for our customers and their families and we will follow best practices and do our part to make the world a better place.
